If you like backyard barbecues and family get-together, you will hardly find a better option than the cornhole game. The smell of the burgers, some lemonade, good music, and the fun time playing a game with friends and family is a must to give a wholesome entertainment experience to your guests.

What Is The Cornhole Game?

This is a traditional game which is enjoyed by players of all ages. Every player waits for his or her turn to throw a bag (like a bean bag) into the hole in the raised platform of the regulation cornhole boards. Getting a bag in the hole gives you three points while getting the bag on the platform gives you a single point. But the bags that do not land on these areas do not get any points. The game continues till one of the players reaches a score of 21 points. It is essential to explain all the game rules and the scoring criteria to all the players before starting the game.

The Cornhole Game Set

Regulation Cornhole boards: The cornhole boards are rectangles having a 6-inch hole close to the top of the platform. The cornhole board platforms are angled in a way whereby the top of the platform is higher off the ground than the bottom. Also, some companies offer custom designs or art-wrapped cornhole boards as per your choice giving you custom cornhole boards.

Cornhole bags: These are square-shaped bags filled with nearly a pound of corn kernels or plastic beadsor sand. They all have a different feel, so it is up to you whichfiller you prefer.

The players have to toss the bag into the hole in the cornhole board, taking their turns for tossing toward the opposite platform. Each player aims to throw the bag into the hole. The bag should at least fall onto the cornhole board so that the player can score some points.

Cancellation Scoring In The Official Game

Most cornhole game players use cancellation scoring which makes the game last longer. For example, in singles, if the first player lands two bags into the hole and one bag on the platform, their score is 7 points. On the other hand, if the second player lands two bags on the platform and one bag in the hole, their score is 5. So, the score of the first player versus the second player is 7-5.

But, in cancellation scoring, the players will cancel out similar results allowing them to play for a longer time. The second player’s bags in the hole cancels out the first player’s bag on the platform, and the first player’s bag on the platform cancels the second player’s bag in the hole. This means that the score of the first player versus the second player is 3-1.

In both the cancellation scoring and the non-cancellation methods of scoring, the score differential remains the same, but the total score remains lower longer in cancellation scoring.

Thus, cancellation scoring allows the players to continue playing for a longer time. Though the official rules of cornhole game are considered universal, the players may change these and form a unique set of rules as they go along in the game. This is referred to as house rules.

The cornhole game has become highly popular in recent years though it has existed for a long time. Some historians claim that the game was invented by a farmer in Germany in the 14th century.
